Getting your home ready for Christmas
The Christmas adverts are coming out thick and fast so it is probably start talking about Christmas. While it seems a long way off, now is the time to start thinking about getting your home ready for the festive season so that everything runs smoothly when the time arrives. Whether you have guest staying over or not now is a good time to think what House Preparation for Christmas is needed to avoid a last minute panic.
House Preparations for Christmas – Our tips
Get ready for your guests
If you are hosting your family this year you might want to think about how you going to put them up. For example do you have space for them to sleep? Perhaps your spare room is more of a dumping ground then a space to put up guests? Well now is the time to think about decluttering the space to make it a restful room for your guests to stay in. Spend time going through all those things you have put in your spare room and getting rid of all of those bits and pieces that you no longer need. This will give you the space you need to ensure you can host even the pickiest of guests.
However, if you don’t have time to do it yourself, as in the run up to Christmas things can get very busy, Hour Hands can assist with decluttering. We’ll take all the stress and hassle out of it for you; we’ll either recycle, give to charity or sell anything of value for you.
If you need extra space for your guests then why not look at investing in a sofa bed so you can easily turn your living room into a sleeping space. Now is the time to order a new sofa so you can ensure it is delivered in time for December. And if you don’t have time to wait in for your delivery, Hour Hands can even help with that.
Check your cooker and service your boiler
When you need to prepare such an important meal the last thing you want is for your kitchen to let you down. Therefore, why not get your cooker checked or you could even think about getting a new one fitted. That way you know that when you most need it you can be sure that everything will work as it should. At Hour Hands we can help you source the right tradesman for the job so you know that your kitchen is in safe hands and that on Christmas day the only thing for you to worry about is the turkey.
No one wants to wake up in a cold house on any winter day; but Christmas morning is probably the worst morning to find out your boiler has packed up! Now is the time to book in your yearly boiler check.
Stage your home
Now is also a good time to make sure your home is warm and cosy and most of all festive. You may not want to start putting up the christmas decorations and lights just yet but by investing in a few key pieces such as cushions and throws your home will feel warm and welcoming. Especially if you’re expecting a stream of guests as they’ll be very impressed by your cosy home.
If you want to get your home spruced up (sorry couldn’t resist) for the festive season, at Hour Hands we can take care of your House Preparation for Christmas. We will make sure it goes smoothly and stress free so that you can enjoy Christmas without the hassle.

Decluttering your home and life
Let’s face it modern life can be hectic and at times it can feel like your whole life is getting just a little bit overwhelming. Sometimes something as simple as decluttering can clear not only your space but also your mind.
By focusing on a new streamlined lifestyle you’ll find that you’re better able to focus on the things that mean the most to you. So how can you have a clear uncluttered life? Well with a few practical steps you might be able to truly live clutter free.
Clear the decks
If you spend time in a cluttered environment it can seep into other areas of your life. By living in an organised and tidy space it gives you time to focus on other things and makes everyday chores like tidying up far easier.
So start by going through every possession and working out not only what you actually use but also what matters in your life. This doesn’t mean chucking out everything that doesn’t have a practical use but it should mean something important to you. So while realistically you’re not going to wear that top that has sat in your wardrobe for years if you feel genuinely upset at the thought of losing an item then making some space for it is fine and in fact important – just don’t do that with everything.
You also need to be quite ruthless at this stage and go through every nook and cranny and look at all your possessions and work out whether they are important or simply a practical item you actually need. And most of all be honest with yourself – do you really need all that stuff and don’t forget the bigger picture of a clutter free home and life. If you find that you really can’t get rid easily then it might be time to call in someone to help. A professional decluttering service can come in with fresh eyes and help you evaluate what really matters to you which will help you part with that stuff.
Clear the emotional baggage
This can be very hard to do but let go of some of that emotional baggage, whether it’s focusing on the people in your life who bring you happiness or simply forgiving and forgetting clearing your life of at least some of the negativity can be really useful.
Clear that to-do list
Even with everything else cleared and decluttered you can’t truly focus with a mile long to-do list. So start working through those chores and get them ticked off so that you can focus on the bigger picture. Start small and tackle some of the easier things on the list and you’ll be more motivated to work on the bigger things and if they are too much to handle then break them down into smaller tasks which will see you clear that list in no time.
However, if the to-do list is simply too long and you are not able to focus at all on the things that mean the most to you then it may be time to call in extra help from someone like Hour Hands who can free up your time so you can concentrate on the things that you want to do and not just the chores. Leading to a truly clutter free life
Let’s face it: when the clock strikes midnight on December 31st we all start the New Year with such high hopes and a list of resolutions, but as January wears on they can become harder to keep. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t set New Year’s resolutions, you just need to follow a few tips to ensure you stick to them.
- Be realistic
One of the easiest ways of setting yourself up for a failure is to set completely unrealistic goals. Let’s be honest, you may not be able to give up your favourite foods entirely. Or, if your goal is to have a completely minimalist home with only a few items, while your current home is very cluttered, that may not be achievable.
However, by resolving to make an effort to eat more healthily more often or to start by decluttering one room then you are more likely to stick to your resolution. And if you smash your target – well, who says resolutions are just for January?
- Is it a priority?
You may think that you need to exercise more or lose weight but if what will really make a difference to your life is seeing more of your family, then you’ll resent any time you spend on your resolution. Instead, work out what is truly a priority to you and make that your resolution. And if that means changing your resolutions now, then it’s never too late
- Remember the bigger picture
Focus on why you want to make a resolution. Is it to get fitter so you can play with the kids, or is it to lose weight so you can feel healthier and more confident, or maybe you just want to see the world? Whatever the reason, if it’s truly a priority then this will give you the push you need to keep going.
- Get outside help
If you are starting out on a new exercise regime it can often be helpful to see a personal trainer who can work out a plan that fits round your lifestyle and can act as a cheerleader to keep you motivated. And this approach can work for other resolutions as well. For example, if you want a clutter free home but find decluttering too hard, hiring someone to help you declutter and throw out old stuff can help get the ball rolling and prove that the process isn’t so hard after all. Or, if your resolution is to travel more you could get someone to help you research your options.
- Make time for your resolution
This can sometimes be hard when you have a busy life, but if you’re going to stick to your resolution it will take some planning and time. Eating more healthily means you might have to spend more time planning meals and cooking, while exercising means regular trips to the gym. If you’re determined to take up a new skill this year you’ll need to devote some time to it but that might mean juggling some other priorities in your life.
Therefore, you might want to free up some time by promising to do something like watch less television or spending less time on the internet. Or why not get someone in to do some of the chores that need doing but simply zap your time, such as admin tasks, filing and shredding? That way you can spend more time doing what you really want to do.
- Reward yourself
By celebrating the small achievements you are more likely to stick to your resolutions. So, if you manage to go to the gym for a month why not treat yourself that item of clothing you’ve had your eye on, or even ensuring you make time for a coffee and some time to yourself? By recognising what you have done and giving yourself goals, you’ll be focused on the next step and therefore stick to the bigger goal.
- Don’t beat yourself up
You’re going to slip up at times but that doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Instead, put the slip behind you and move on without beating yourself up. Everyone falters once in a while.
- Keep going
Experts claim that it takes 21 days for something to become a habit and six months before it becomes part of your personality, so don’t expect overnight results but give your resolution time and it will be second nature.
- Tell people
By making your resolution public you can not only be held accountable if you don’t try to stick to it, you also have people who can be your cheerleaders when it’s going well.
- Keep going
You don’t only have to make resolutions at New Year’s; you can make them throughout the year. Recommit to your resolution every 24 hours, as you can do anything for 24 hours and before you know it, it will be New Year’s Eve again.
Whatever your goals for 2016, Hour Hands can help free up your time for the things that matter to you, making sticking to those resolutions that little bit easier.
