Business leaders: embrace the back-to-school energy and make September count!

It’s September and getting back into the groove of running a business after holidays, may feel a mix of emotions, including trepidation, as we realise that’s the last bank holiday until Christmas Day and look outside to see rain once again sweeping the country.

But the return from a break from work and the end of summer doesn’t have to mean a sluggish slide back into routine. September offers a natural reset point and a chance to shake off summer’s slower pace and attack the final quarter of 2025 with renewed vigour. Your competitors may be easing back in gradually, but smart business leaders use this period to their competitive advantage, seeing it as an opportunity for a fresh start.

Let’s reignite your fire

We’ve taken a quick survey amongst the experienced Hour Hands team and compiled a list of five quick actions you can take to kick start September. We’re going to take action ourselves – will you too?

  1. Conduct a quarterly health check

Book out half a day to review your performance against your key targets.

Where are you ahead? Where are you lagging? An honest assessment will create clarity and urgency – and from this will come the motivation you need to blast your way into September.

  1. Set three bold objectives for the remaining months

We’re not talking about wishy-washy resolutions, but specific, measurable goals that excite you. Perhaps you want to land that dream client or close the deal you’ve been working on for months. Launching a new service, or finally implement the system that’s been on your to-do list for months.

  1. Refresh your workspace and routines

We’re talking about a clear out of all the physical and digital clutter that’s accumulated over the summer. Reorganise your office, update your CRM, or invest in that productivity tool you’ve been considering. Get rid of rubbish and introduce a plant or a painting that makes you feel good. Small environmental changes can trigger significant shifts in your mindset.

  1. Schedule strategic thinking time

Block out weekly slots as a time when you can plan for your business and personal future. Find a space away from daily operational demands and ensure this time is sacrosanct – don’t accept appointments, don’t answer emails. This time is when your breakthrough ideas will emerge.

  1. Reconnect with your network

Summer is notoriously quiet for meetings and networking so now that September is here, make time to reach out to dormant contacts, schedule coffee meetings, or make plans to attend industry events.

The final quarter advantage

After watching American football over the summer, I like this analogy the most. Whilst others ease back into work mode for the final quarter of the calendar year, we challenge you to create momentum and decisively drive towards the end zone. We’re talking about acceleration, boosting your business and storming towards Christmas.

There’s a real psychological power that comes from making a fresh start. Just as students approach a new academic year with goals and aspirations, business owners can channel a similar mindset to drive meaningful change and growth.

We can help you discover new networking groups and events, and we offer financial health checks managed by our brilliant bookkeepers.

Why not add us to your contacts list for when you need help with any aspect of your business from bookkeeping to acting as a virtual PA or if you need help with one off tasks such as developing a business plan, organising a team recognition event. This will give you back time to concentrate on driving your business forward without getting bogged down in tasks.
