International Women’s Day 2023

International Women’s Day 2023

We’ve celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8th March since 1911. That’s over a century of taking just one day to consider women and their role in our lives. Of course, society was very different back then and we had a lot to fight for to ensure even basic equality. However, it’s important to continue the tradition of having a day to celebrate and empower women. Despite huge progress, we are still fighting in so many areas – the bias may not always be visible but it’s there.

When women support each other, incredible things happen

I think that it’s great to take a day to remind women that they are amazing and can achieve wonderful things for themselves, their families, and for all of society.

My main message today is to look after each other. I am so grateful that there are many women (and men!) quick to offer support and guidance – and time out of a busy family and work life to relax and have fun. So often, women undermine each other. I’ve never forgotten my time at the school gate, where there is a huge amount of peer pressure to act and look a certain way. It’s wonderful when women are there for each other.

Please indulge me whilst I speak personally for a short while.

International Women’s Day message – She believed she could, so she did.

When I thought about starting my own business, Hour Hands, I wasn’t sure that I could do it. Thankfully for all my wonderful clients, there were women out there who went out of their way to encourage me to take that leap of faith: they even became my first clients!  But it’s not surprising that I was unsure that I could make it work. In 2017, only 5.6% of UK women ran their own businesses, compared to 15% of women in Canada, almost 11% of women in the US, and over 9% of women in Australia and the Netherlands. (Rose Review of Female Entrepreneurship, HM Treasury 2019). Whilst there is a lot more support now for women entrepreneurs, there is so much more we can do to help those that would like to take the opportunity to start a business.

Friendship is the most beautiful relationship and being friends with a woman is a blessing.

I am so lucky to have a wonderful group of friends for dog walking, celebrating birthdays and taking time out from daily life. Each one is so different in their thoughts and experiences but it’s this rich diversity that creates a well-rounded group of people. People who can challenge each other in a safe way and offer so many useful insights. The Hour Hands team is another collection of wonderful women. Their passion and tenacity always amazes me as they work to deliver everything our clients need and demand. It’s important to say that I also have wonderful friendships with men too – particularly my husband. But today is Women’s Day so I’ll save their thanks for another time!

Women are inspirations for others in so many ways. They wonderfully manage both their personal as well as professional lives.

So many women have helped me get to where I am today, too many to name them all. All have freely given me support when I needed it, shared advice when I asked, and always, always have been honest, even if I didn’t want to hear what they said.

We need our sisterhood to help us become and be the best of ourselves.

This Women’s Day, and every day, stand up for women.
