Why I’m not setting a new year’s resolution by Nat

Lose weight. Go to bed earlier. Learn a new hobby. Drink less. Stop smoking. Go out more. Go out less. Budget. Stop being late. Read more. Get fitter…wow, the pressure!

After spending many, many years having lists upon lists of New Year’s resolutions in readiness to smash every 12 months, I’ve decided to take the pressure off myself. Not because I can’t fulfill my many crazy, fun and entertaining ideas (from a highly targeted driven individual) of what I wish to conquer next but more because I know I will absolutely succeed in every goal I set myself.

Why is that a bad thing I hear you ask?

It’s not. However, sometimes, the more I succeed, the more I feel the need to challenge myself. Which, of course, is great. Well done to me for all of those previous hobbies I’ve tried, courses I’ve completed, reading (ok, this was a failure and lasted all of 8 months during covid) targets I smashed and saying yes to everything.

It’s exhausting and doesn’t leave room for creativity, flexibility and a true desire of achieving anything else.

I have realised that I concentrate so much on completing said tasks that I don’t actually enjoy achieving them. They become a to-do list and I hyper focus on ticking them off the list and picture the completed list as the goal rather than having fun and enjoying what I have set out to try.

By having the freedom to explore new things or trying to change habits for the better as and when they arise, for me, is much more rewarding. Approaching opportunities as and when I face them as opposed to my pre-planned list (which was often written in October) for the following January is so much more satisfying to me.

So, my New Year’s resolution this year is to not set one!

Have you set any?
